We wanted a character hotel in New York and the Evelyn certainly was! Apparently haunted, it was dark and felt more east european than american. Our room on the 3rd floor was small (but thats only to be expected in such a packed city) and the en-suite very small but clean and functional, though the shower was either boiling hot or freezing cold, it didn't want to adjust to a useable setting. There was a mini bar - which we were warned not to use as it was soooo expensive - and some interesting items in the room for purchase - probably because, we discovered, it was next door to the Sex Museum!! The staff were lovely, the housekeeping staff really friendly and special mention must be made of Noah on reception who is an absolute diamond, so helpful and kind, an absolutely lovely guy, the hotel are lucky to have him. One downside was the breakfast - you are given vouchers to use in the small bar that people on the street also use - but they are only given for one item and one drink on a particular selection, if you want anything else you have to pay extra which we thought very unfair. One morning there was nowhere to sit either in the bar or the mezzanine area, as there were workers on laptops using it so we ended up taking our yogurt/tea/breakfast bap back to the room. One of the serving staff was incredibly rude, he was obviously hassled by the amount of orders and couldn't keep up & when I innocently asked if could have a bap with just egg no cheese was furious and said "I can only make what you order" when the bap had not even been made up. The hotel is in a great location, not far from the subway station and a 10 minute walk to Times Square and The Empire State Building is just round the corner. There are lots of restaurants and bars nearby too, though they were not exactly cheap eats. It was the first time we had been to NY so don't have anything else to compare with, but The Evelyn is certainly a great hotel with character, unlike most of the others we saw walking round the city.Show More

This year we had a quick 24 hours in town to see a few shows and celebrate his birthday. I called the day before and spoke with Amal, who assured me that she would ensure the day was special. When we arrived at the hotel to check in, Amal was there. She greeted us warmly and assisted me in upgrading our accommodations. When we finally made it into our room, there was a gift bag on the bed with a birthday card and all sorts of delicious snacks. It was so thoughtful and so specific to my husband. We could not have asked for a more hospitable welcome. From dinner at Brass to breakfast at Ninepin Cafe, everything about our experience was note perfect.
