I also apologise for the length of this review, but I think you need to go in with your eyes open before you book Hakone Kowakien Ten-Yu. The entire hotel smells of sulphur which I guess is the norm for an onsen hotel but for me I found it over powering. The room, what they call a maisonette, was fine but dated and certainly needs refurbishing. We were asked not to wear shoes in the room but to use the provided footwear. To be honest the footwear looked old and well used and I really didn’t want to wear sandals that multiple others had worn. They do provide kimonos which the majority of guests wear all day including at dinner. We were handed several leaflets detailing the rules of the hotel and were told any lost door keys would be chargeable, not something I’d expect for this price bracket. We had a bath on the balcony that was filled with hot spring water the temperature I guessed was around 44 degrees - just too hot for us. Also the balcony had a slated fence which did not enable you to take in the lovely view of the mountains. The beds were on the floor, but were reasonable comfortable but again, when lying on the bed you just looked at the wooden slates. The bed linen was okay, but the towels were thin and small. There was a note in the toilet asking you to be economical with the toilet paper, something I have never seen before! If you wanted your room cleaned you had to make sure you put a note on the outside of your door by 12 noon. Meals were a huge disappointment for me. We were told on our first night that we had to eat at 5.30 we did persuade them to move it to 6.30 but no later. We were seated in a soulless side room with no other guests and no atmosphere. We came to call it the room of doom. All meals are buffet style and there is a huge selection of primarily fish, shellfish and Japanese dishes. Everything we selected that night was luke warm at best; soggy tempera, congealed pasta etc. The only thing we felt was good was the sushi. We had to walk into the main restaurant to get the attention of a server to get drinks. When you finish your meal you are expected to clear it away to trolleys; I felt as if I was in a canteen! At breakfast there was a huge queue - they were giving numbers out to guests as part of their wait system. On the Sunday almost the entire lobby was filled with guests waiting for breakfast. Twice we requested a cab via reception and twice we were told none were available. In the end we used a company called Go and did get a taxi. We asked if the concierge could check on an external restaurant booking, we were ask to wait. Roughly 10 minutes later we were then told the concierge would not be returning for an hour. It was 3.30 in the afternoon, is that normal, no one covers the desk? There is a coffee station in the lobby but it was never open during the morning nor was it open when I wanted a coffee in the evening at 8pm. We actually only saw it open the once at 6.30pm. We went to the bar one night and discovered they have a cover charge and this combined with the fact they only have one white wine served by the glass (California Chardonnay) didn’t entice us to stay. There is a spa but we didn’t use it and when we did go one afternoon it was closed. The staff are very pleasant but it my view not terribly efficient. The onsens were very pleasant, large, clean with great views. They do offer free ice creams and cold tea, you can just help yourselves. There were so few positives about this hotel in fact of the 6 hotels we stayed at in Japan it was by far the worst - it just wasn’t for us!Show More

The room was large (with outside bath) although a little tired. Staff were friendly and helpful. The public onsens were good. Meals were buffet style with a good choice (although a bit the same after 3 nights) There was a convenient shuttle to connecting train stations etc and bus stops outside the hotel so it made getting around convenient There were yukatans / kimonos available to wear around the hotel if you preferred.Show More

This is a truly special hotel - it is a traditional ryokan, which is wonderful, although you also have all the mod cons you’d expect from a 5 star hotel - set in the mountain side with beautiful trees...This is a truly special hotel - it is a traditional ryokan, which is wonderful, although you also have all the mod cons you’d expect from a 5 star hotel - set in the mountain side with beautiful trees all around and stunning inside and outside onsen (spa pools). They call them public baths - don’t be put off - they are beautiful and private to the hotel guests. We also had a private hot spring spa bath on our balcony! The food was wonderful and the hotel staff and service were outstanding. Also lovely were the pyjamas and robes which you are encouraged to wear during your stay - it was lovely to wear them to dinner and also quick and easy for going for a sunrise onsen in the infinity pool! We stayed one night, I would recommend at least 2 nights. A wonderful hotel and Hakone itself is fantastic. Lastly, I cannot recommended the Hakone open air museum enough - breathtaking!Show More
