As I planned my Bali vacation, I knew I wanted to be fully immersed in nature. Of all the hotels and resorts I researched, I kept coming back to Nandini Jungle by Hanging Gardens. Something about bein...As I planned my Bali vacation, I knew I wanted to be fully immersed in nature. Of all the hotels and resorts I researched, I kept coming back to Nandini Jungle by Hanging Gardens. Something about being nestled right in the heart of the jungle felt like exactly what I needed, and Nandini Jungle more than delivered. After a 30+ hour journey from Connecticut in the United States, I arrived at the resort around 1:00 a.m. The ride from the Denpasar airport took about two hours, and even in the darkness I could feel the shift from city to rainforest. When I arrived, I was greeted by Arta, who was kind and genuinely welcoming. He escorted me to my room, where I found a sweet welcome treat of delicious cookies, a beautifully turned-down king size bed that invited me to finally rest, and a lovely basket of local fruit (including Salak or “snake fruit,” which soon became my favorite snack while in Bali). When I woke up the next morning, I opened the balcony doors and was met with a view that took my breath away. I was literally sitting in the middle of the jungle, surrounded by lush greenery and a symphony of nature from the cicadas and birds, it was so magical. Even on the rainy days, the experience was just as beautiful; falling asleep to rainfall in the middle of the jungle is an experience that I will never forget. The pool area was peaceful and serene and the setting felt like a private rainforest sanctuary, Antara the pool attendant was kind and attentive. I also had a blessing purification down by the river performed by a Hindu priest. This unforgettable, spiritual experience was arranged by Adnyani, who took such thoughtful care in making it special and was very kind, attentive, and helpful during my entire stay. The food at Nandini Jungle deserves its own praise. Breakfast was included in my package and included a generous spread of delicious, fresh, well-prepared dishes. Each morning, I was greeted by the most wonderful restaurant staff, including Lestari, who was so kind and lovely. I was regularly referred to by name and the staff paid such close attention to my food preferences and sensitivities, they were so accommodating and always made sure I had what I needed. Throughout my entire stay, I was consistently welcomed with kindness, warmth, and genuine hospitality from every staff member I encountered. Agus, the manager introduced himself on day one and for the rest of my stay, repeatedly checked in to make sure I had what I needed for the most comfortable stay. Toupa, my room attendant and the rest of the hospitality staff kept my room impeccably clean, and the nightly turndown service added a touch of luxury that I appreciated. Laundry service was available and extremely helpful. The resort also offers a complimentary shuttle to Ubud Center twice a day, which made exploring the area incredibly convenient. The driver, Rico, was friendly and safe and always greeted me with a smile. I wholeheartedly recommend Nandini Jungle by Hanging Gardens—not just for its breathtaking location deep in the jungle, but for the people who make the experience feel truly special. The resort’s layout is terraced along the hillside above the Ayung River valley; the property uses a funicular (or rope-car system) to transport guests (and luggage) between levels — a practical solution to steep terrain, and a novel part of the arrival experience. This however is only from half way down : the staff help with luggage etc . The resort’s philosophy emphasises minimal disturbance to nature: the architecture is integrated into the existing trees and slopes rather than reshaped to fit it. L Accommodation & View Nandini offers a selection of villas and villa suites (in total, 34 units combining standard villas and luxury suites) designed in Balinese style, with wood accents, neutral tones, and large windows that frame jungle panoramas. Many rooms have private balconies overlooking the jungle or the resort’s pool. I stayed in villa 41 which was a sunrise villa Bathrooms are often open or semi-open to the outdoors if you have a jungle view . I loved waking to misty jungle views and seeing the sunrise . The rooms are cleaned daily and have fresh water and a minibar (chargeable ) Amenities & Facilities • Pool & grounds: The outdoor infinity pool and adjacent cabanas provide a compelling centrepiece. Many guests spend considerable time here, lounging in the forest canopy setting. • Spa (Sungai Spa): The spa offers treatments in indoor and outdoor settings, with a menu of Balinese massage, body scrubs, and more. • Wellness & activities: Yoga, morning meditation, nature treks, and, for more spiritual travellers, a “River Healing Ritual” (descending to the sacred Ayung River for a blessing) are among the offered experiences. • Dining (Wild Ginger Restaurant, river dinners): The resort’s restaurant focuses on Indonesian and international cuisine, with opportunities for romantic candlelit dinners. I ate from their menu everyday and the staff here are absolutely superb • Extras: Afternoon tea served daily 3pm to 5pm . shuttle service to Ubud centre 10am and 14:00 returning at 15:00 . There is also a new gym which I tested and it has everything you need . Weights running etc . Daily Rhythm & Impressions Your days become unhurried. Wake to dappled light and birdsong, slide onto your balcony or terrace, sip coffee in the mist. Venture down to the infinity pool, reading or relaxing in private cabanas. Later, schedule a spa treatment or a yoga class, stroll forest paths, or simply lose yourself in the greenery. In evenings, the dinners are magical — candlelit, intimate, with the sound of flowing water as ambience. One reviewer describes it as a “hidden wellness retreat” that restores, reconnects, and rejuvenates. The overall consensus: this place isn’t about frenetic sightseeing — it’s about intentional rest and Departure & Final Thoughts When your stay draws to a close, the check-out process is as gentle as the arrival. The staff created a seamless experience, were professional and provided exceptional care and service. Agus, Adyani, made our stay extra special, chatting to us each day to make sure we had what we needed, and Frida helped us understand the Balinese culture and ceremonies occurring in the village that Nandini is nestled in between. All staff were professional, the food and cocktails were second to none. Each night there was a different entertainer performing at dinner including acoustic guitarist and Balinese traditional dancers. We loved our Yoga class with Tiwi each day overlooking the jungle, listening to the sounds of the frogs and cicadas, stretching and challenging ourselves. The Spa treatments were magic with the sounds of the majestic river and jungle in the background. The room was perfect, overlooking jungle and we saw monkeys in the distance, we were right near the 200 steps down to the river and we enjoyed walking down to marvel at this incredible and powerful site. We had our own coffee machine which was handy and the pool and jacuzzi were not far from us, the gym was brand new and the equipment was excellent. We loved the funicular that we rode up the hill through the jungle to dinner each night, although we also liked the challenge of the stairs as much as we felt like. We did the e-bike tour in Ubud one day, which was incredible, but decided we had everything we needed at Nandini and to spend the rest of the time soaking in the uniqueness of Nandini as much as we could. We took advantage of this perk and booked a trip via Luxury Escapes and stayed at Nandini Jungle by Hanging Gardens. It was awesome. The hotel was on a very steep slope with a ton of stairs taking you down to the Ayung River. This meant that our room had a fantastic view out over the Payangan Rainforest, and there was a quirky little funicular which travelled halfway up the hill. Nandini was unquestionably not for people with mobility issues, and it was definitely not wheelchair accessible. Nandini Jungle is also a fair distance from Ubud (30 - 45 minutes, depending on the traffic), but if you are looking for a getaway where you are genuinely ‘away’, Nandini is the place for you. The staff were all amazing, super friendly and helpful, our primary server at breakfast each morning was Lestari, she asked what our plans were each day and made valuable suggestions to our itinerary. We enjoyed spending time in the pool, which had a beautiful view of the jungle and a ledge to sit on while drinking cocktails made poolside at the pool bar. We were also treated to two 90-minute massages each as part of our package; we had the choice of going down to the riverside spa or having them in our room. We ventured down to the spa on the funicular for our massages. We enjoyed the jungle sounds (mostly cicadas) during our treatments. If, like us, you have dinner included, there is a limited dinner menu, but we found enough options for the time we were there.Show More
