We stayed in room 364. The sheets were stained upon arrival, the carpet was old, torn, and constantly felt damp from the ocean air. It never felt or looked clean, and I didn’t even want to put my feet in the bed after walking on it. The balcony chairs were so short that at 5’3” I couldn’t even see the ocean view I paid for—staff actually told me to stack pillows under my ass for extra height…
Storage was terrible, not enough countertop space, one tiny dresser, and two bedside tables. Every drawer was dusty inside and so stiff they were difficult to open and close. For a property charging this much, the room shouldn’t feel like it hasn’t been maintained in years. The elevator also stunk 😀
For a beachfront hotel, there were no drying racks for swimsuits or towels. Instead, you’re stuck with a single washer and dryer for the entire property. $7 a load if you don’t bring your own detergent. If someone leaves their clothes sitting, too bad. On night two I actually called the front desk crying because I couldn’t believe what I was getting for the price. The only response? “Call back in the morning.” When I did, no accommodation was made—just told that the only rooms without carpet are on the first floor. That should be disclosed at booking, since most guests don’t want to trade their ocean view for a ground-floor room just to avoid nasty carpet.
Staff admitted the reason carpet hasn’t been replaced in years is because the owners don’t want to lose $$$. That says it all.
At Marriott, this would never happen—guests would be upgraded, cared for, and treated with genuine hospitality. San Diego is lucky Marriott doesn’t have oceanfront here, because they’d blow places like this out of the water.
Instead of reinvesting in the rooms, they nickel-and-dime guests to death, $40 a day parking, $15 umbrella rental, straight scamming by luring people in with the modern-looking pool furniture and art that you see from the boardwalk. Whoever runs this joint should be embarrassed and re-evaluate their life. Musty carpet, sour elevators … place reeks of neglect.
