Having read some of the reviews, I was a little worried and didn’t really know what to expect but was very pleasantly surprised and relieved!!
We had booked a "Classic Room with balcony or window" and was allocated a very comfortable room on the 5th floor in the older part of the building. The room had a side balcony with a great view of Mount Vesuvius, and there was also a small juliet balcony overlooking the main road to the front of the hotel. I'll admit there was a lot of traffic noise but we didn't really spend much time in the room so we got used to it and it didn’t bother us. The air con was controlled by reception, which was mentioned when we were checking in. It was a little unusual, and we ended up asking that it be turned off as it was noisy at night time, interrupting our sleep. Beds were very comfy. Pool area looked lovely but the weather was very mixed during our stay so we didn't spend any time there.
The staff of this hotel are so nice and helpful. On the first day, as soon as we arrived outside, a member of staff came out to greet us and bring in our luggage. The receptionists were friendly, efficiently checked us in, and gave us info and maps for exploring the area. We also have to say a big shout out to the breakfast staff, particularly Maria, who greeted and chatted with each and every guest each morning. She even created an impromptu birthday "cake" of fruit and muffins complete with candle for me when they learnt it was by birthday.
As the hotel is on the main road that leads from Naples, its a great base for exploring Sorrento. I had checked out several available places before deciding, some were outside our price range, while others boasted views etc, but their location was a little bit further outside the main touristy part, often uphill, and though they looked to be serviced by public transport, we didnt want the hassle of having to wait around for buses/taxis to get anywhere. So for us, even though the location of Grand Hotel Flora isn't exactly pretty, it is very close, around a 10 min walk to the hustle and bustle of Piazza Tasso, and its all on the flat.
There's a couple of nice bars and restaurants close to the hotel so our routine would be to go into the touristy parts, day trip to Positano etc, and then in the evening we'd leave the busy touristy parts and make our way back towards the hotel, stopping off for our food/drink closer to the hotel. The Banana Split bar is definitely worth a visit - staff are really friendly and the place has a lovely relaxing atmosphere. We had our evening meal a few times in Cucina 246, a small but very popular restaurant right next door to the hotel, definitely worth checking out.
We really enjoyed our stay in Hotel Grand Flora and would have no hesitation of staying again. We loved Sorrento and will definitely be back.Show More
