We came to Mills House just after noon. We could not find any parking spaces in the front of this peach painted hotel for registration. We circled the block and I left my wife out to do the paperwork.
There is a parking garage behind Mill’s House. A sign will probably say the garage is “FULL.” It is not. I went in, took a ticket and within 5 spaces I found an open spot. We found out later there is a walk-through from the garage to the hotel on the garage’s 4th floor which connects to the hotel’s 2nd floor by the pool area. Normal valet parking is $59 a day. For 2 days of parking in the garage we paid but $48. It would have been $118 through the hotel’s valet service which uses the same garage.
Mill’s House hotel is truly a four star and one could argue a 5-star hotel. In a town filled with high end accommodations, you will not go wrong in choosing Mill House. Many of the downtown budget hotels have closed, probably because of Covid.
From the reception through the open sitting areas, to the bar and restaurant a feeling of high-end ambiance prevails. On the weekdays, champaign is given out to the guests on the main floor—a nice touch.
Our room was on the 6th floor. It was indeed small compared to the $700 plus price for one night’s lodging. The padded bench at one end did provide plenty of seating room though. The room was clean, the bed extremely comfortable, the TV large, the AC cold and we loved the walk-in shower. We even had a view of the delightful pool and a side view of Ft. Sumter in the distance.
The Iron Rose bar area is huge located on the ground floor. At night it can get quite busy. The Happy Hour is exceptional—something not to be missed. We did have breakfast in the Iron Rose restaurant. Friendly service, plenty of coffee and good food. I would have liked the broccoli quiche to have been bigger, but it did have superb taste.
We were in close proximity to two of our favorite restaurants: Magnolias and Slightly North of Broad. If you did not want to have breakfast or lunch at the hotel, a favorite of many is Toast just a few hundred feet away.
We enjoyed walking down several historic streets close by our hotel such as Meeting Street, East Bay and King Street. And if you have never done the Ft. Sumter tour, it is well worth seeing—particularly the last tour of the day when the flag is brought down.
There is much to see and do around Charleston. We did enjoy visiting the Magnolia Plantation and Garden. Finding the Angel Oak tree outside of town is a real treat too.
Why did we rank Mill’s House 4 Stars instead of 5 stars? First, the conundrum with the parking in front of the hotel. Secondly, the room was indeed small for the price we paid. Overall, though, we did have a superb experience at the Mill House. We would recommend this hotel for anyone who wants to be in the center of the historic district and is willing to pay the price.
The questions are: is the price worth the monies? We recently purchased a 3-night Caribbean cruise on Celebrity with insurance for a balcony stateroom which was less than one night’s stay at the Mill House. Will the Mill House become our “go-to” hotel for future visits?
