Arrived after long flight travel and a long 1.5 hr taxi ride to front ...The best thing about this place is the location. First impressions matter, and check-in was a warning sign for what was to come. Arrived after long flight travel and a long 1.5 hr taxi ride to front desk representatives laughing and not acknowledging us - even in the Riu class line. It was like we were interrupting their conversation. No smile or welcome just, “Name”. Was told room wasn’t ready and then we would be put on a “waiting list” and then I asked (because I had read online) if we paid extra could we get an earlier check-in and suddenly our room was available right away. No offer to help with bags. Handed piece of paper with WiFi code and told elevators to the right. The room we were given was on the 14th floor - family room so decent size. It seemed clean until we discovered long black hairs on the sofa. Vinyl floor and odd decor-it looked and felt very cheap, pretty much in line with a 2 or 3-star property at best. Regretted decision and wanted to leave but tried to keep an open mind. Had the fridge in the room but when opened it smelled of mildew. Felt the need to pour the water into a cup rather than smell the bottle or put your mouth on it. The mattresses and bed linens are poor quality. You know the sheets are thin when you can see the lines of the mattress pattern through them…the bathroom and shower were OK. Surprisingly the towels were fluffy and better quality, but the provided bath products were not luxurious. Hot water and pressure fine. The elevators were busy but typical for a NYC hotel of this size. People struggled with the card reader and often rode up and down as a result. The grab and go cafe next door was convenient and had much better service and pastries. The Fashion Bar was again “cheap looking” with plastic uncomfortable bar seats and very limited selection - ordered a common White Russian one night and told no can do. And then there’s the “touted” breakfast. It’s as has been described very busy and chaotic, but it was much, much worse than that. It was like waiting at a line at Disney at first and then racing around like bumper cars trying to find food. There are multiple seating sections, and the people working the lines and tables were not friendly - many of them frowning or disinterested. They stand right outside the elevators and bark orders. One day there was a misunderstanding-we thought we were told to go to the “bar section” but when we went there got turned away and accused of not telling the truth, and the person who originally told us copped an attitude and said when she said go to the right she meant to go behind the wall to the Disney-like weaving line and not to the bar on the right. The bar section apparently closes at 9AM even if there is a long line. How were we supposed to know? We ate at the bar the day before. We didn’t even know what was behind that wall. She argued with us and made us feel stupid and very uncomfortable. I got her name and went to the front desk to complain and the manager “took down my info.” Then when we finally got in the breakfast area they were low on certain food and had no juices or water. And fast forward to the next day they were pretty much out of food at 9AM in our section and when I told the supervisor he patted me and said you can go make a complaint at the front desk. So I did. But again, the front desk manager just apologized for the inconvenience. The breakfast item quality was also hit or miss - plenty of options - but way too stressful to enjoy even if included in the cost. Not a great way to start our days…at all. As a result, really because of the low quality feel and lowest quality customer service we would not recommend or stay here ever again, even if there was a good deal. They obviously don’t care about customers and rely on their location. Been coming to the city and stayed in different places for 25 years. Had seen this location and read reviews for months on a couple of hotels trying to decide and landed on this one. So if you like are considering, DON’T DO IT! I regret not staying at the other choice where the room was smaller but their email correspondence to questions about booking was so kind and refreshing. Wish we had stayed there or anywhere else -this was so disappointing. It’s still the greatest city in the world, but this hotel is the worst place we have stayed in it!Show More

People are constantly coming and going, waiting to be checked in or ...The Hotel RIU Plaza New York is a very busy hotel in an excellent location. It is situated on Restaurant Row on W. 46th St. in NYC. People are constantly coming and going, waiting to be checked in or waiting to go to the airport. Restaurant Row is an optimal location since the hotel is surrounded by good restaurants, cinemas and the Broadway theaters, close to Port Authority and not far from Penn Station. Check in was uneventful but one caveat-the price you paid for your stay does not include a facility fee which is $35/daily which is billed when you arrive. [this is common] They also hold a $100 security deposit for the room which is credited back to your account when your stay ends. Wi Fi is given to you prior to check in. The hotel has more of a European feel to it and has many more international guests than other hotels in the area. There is an onsite restaurant The Theater Buffet but I cannot comment on this since I did not eat there during this stay. In terms of room location, if you are a light sleeper ask for a room towards the back of the hotel, not on 8th avenue since it may be noisy. My room was on 8th Avenue but was not a problem. The hotel also offers free breakfast [hot and cold food] which is very comprehensive and delicious. It is however very busy. The breakfast goes from 7a-10a and at 7:30a the room is packed with people and people waiting to be seated. At 8:30a, the room begins to thin out somewhat. Solo travelers may have a problem here since you are brought to your table and then told to get food, However, the guy behind our group went to get food and when he returned there was already someone else sitting and eating at the table he had been assigned. No one can save your seat for you unless you are travelling with other people, as I was. The poor guy asked the people next to him to watch his table when he went up the second time, but they were from the Netherlands and spoke only Dutch. Using the elevator is also a little tricky. There is a slot that you have to put you room key into in order to trigger your floor. The slot looks a lot bigger but it is only the width of a credit card. You have to insert it several times since the light must go from red to green in order for the system to trigger your floor. Several times I had to depend on the kindness of strangers to help me until I got the hang of it. Getting from your floor to the lobby is not a problem. Getting from the lobby to your floor is where the problem lies. The room itself was very nice and comfortable. The shower is enclosed in a large tinted glass square and the pan in the shower appears to look slippery but was not. There were no decals on the surface of the shower pan nor grab bars which may be a concern for seniors. There was excellent water pressure and the water was hot and there is the option of using the hand held or raindrop shower. The room is spacious and is well equipped with black out curtains, a nice desk, excellent room lighting [You have to put your key in the slot by the door in order to trigger the lights to come on in your room] The bed is comfortable and the floors are all non-carpeted. [a plus] There is a fridge [no mini bar] ironing board, iron and a safe. Non deal breakers for me was the lack of a microwave and a coffee and tea service-the breakfast makes up for this. There are instructions on the wall as to how to control the temperature in your room. The room has ample towels and toiletries. It was a very comfortable stay, an excellent location, efficient staff and I would recommend and will return.Show More

Yes, this is going to be a damning review and no, I get no pleasure in writing this. Just a heads-up to others before you part with your hard earned dollars. In the interest of balance lets start with the good points (this won't take long). The check-in procedure was very good. Our room wasn't quite ready No problem this was down to us as it was only 2p.m. So we went for coffee in the hotels coffee shop, where the staff were always friendly and courteous no matter how busy they were. They gave excellent service all the time we were there. The hotel staff apart from a lady in the bar and breakfast room were pretty awful. Sadly, good service here is the exception rather than the rule. The room was adequate, bit tired, not helped by a chip on the basin and the state of the wall plugs. Small things, but an easy fix and first impressions and so on. The main problem appears to be a distinct lack in staff training. Where the smallest request or question is met with either a terse reply, intolerance or just plain rudeness. One occasion a security man handed me a key to a restroom without looking up or a word. A chambermaid asked to make up out room was clearly angry chucking things around in our bathroom that my wife went to see if she was alright. I tried to book a late checkout and was told to come to the desk on the morning which I duly did only to be told I was still too early and would have to do it the following day. No big deal you say, but if you have mobility issues you can do without the hassle. Besides, I thought they would appreciate the notice. By far the worst was final day breakfast with an hour to go there was no food. I politely asked a member of staff and was met by "I'm Waiting," Curt at best. So, all I had was the most expensive bowl of Cheerios. Finally after requesting a porter to bring our luggage down, I got a phonecall (at least they called) telling me they are very busy and will be at least 15 minutes. This didn't work for us so somehow I got the four cases downstairs into the lobby. I couldn't wait to get out of this place. I know hotels hate it when they get a bad review and want you to talk to them there and then to avoid this But there is so much wrong with this place it is hard to know where to start. Too many guests not enough staff (and even fewer good ones) I was going to email the GM but thought it would be better to write a review so all can see it. The lobby which was always difficult to negotiate because of the amount of people was ironically beautifully decorated for Halloween. But unless you like dealing with staff who have the grace and understanding of the meanest linebacker you have ever seen. So many places to stay in NYC. I would give the Rui Plaza a miss. Unless you want the ,"Fawlty Towers" experience.Show More

We was on the 20th floor with a view of the side streets with theatres on every street, there was building works going off across the road but we didn’t hear any noise from it, the main noise i heard quite a lot was police cars & fire engines sirens, but u have to remember its a busy busy area. The breakfast catered to everybody the only downside is it felt a bit crammed but the staff are continuously clearing away. There was 5 lifts in the foyer and at busy breakfast times there always full. The staff were all very polite & friendly. We went on get your guide to buy tickets for Empire state building, Top of the rock observatory, Ground zero 911, Staten island ferry which cost about £114 each person for all of them. We used the underground to get to places a bit far to walk to which was surprisingly easy and the staff there was always happy to help. We ended been late ( we got lost) walking to staten island ferry but the staff was great and allowed us to still do our trip. Central park is lovely but there are lots & lots off people trying to get you to do a tuk tuk or horse & carriage around it, the prices are set so even if someone promises a cheaper price dont get fooled. There is a ice skating rink at Rockerfella centre but only small but the 1 at Central park is a lot bigger and lots cheaper, loads of squirrels running around and New York was just starting to trim up for christmas which made our trip even more special. Alcohol very expensive & food can be too but we expected that its the tipping bit that confused us most as they expect at least 10% but then say you can give 20%,30%, 50% but wen ended up worrying if they thought we was mean by not giving top tips.Show More
