It was unaffected by the stock market c...The Drake Hotel, one of Chicago's most fashionable and luxurious accommodations, overlooking Oak Street Beach and Lake Michigan, opened in 1920 to rave notices. It was unaffected by the stock market crash of 1929 and subsequent Depression, continuing to attract such icons as Walt Disney, Bing Crosby, George Gershwin and Charles Lindbergh. It was acquired by Hilton International in 1980 and restored to its former glory. But it isn't the same. Not the way I knew it. I recall dining at the Camillia House, which closed in 1977, and the Cape Cod Room, which closed in 2017 after 83 years, where Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio carved their initials in the wooden bar after their 1954 wedding. And the upstairs restaurant where Irv Kupcinet, Sid Luckman and their pals had lunch every Saturday. Today, the Drake, located at 140 East Walton Place, at the north end of the Magnificent Mile, still serves afternoon tea in the Palm Court where Queen Elizabeth 11 and Princess Diana once made royal appearances for a tradition that dates to the 1920s. Visitors can dine at the Coq d'Or, which opened in 1933, on the day after Prohibition was repealed, the Cafe on Oak and Lavazza. At Coq d'Or, a popular gathering place for cocktails, I heartily recommend a bowl of traditional Bookbinder's Red Snapper soup and a plate of fish and chips. The Drake, which offers 535 guest rooms and 74 suites and every convenience you might expect of a five-star hotel, has been awarded Five Diamonds by AAA, has been designated a National Historic Landmark and added to the National Register of Historic Places.Show More

I understand historic and that some things may be built awkwardly because of the age of the building. To say we were disappointed is an understatement. First the positive: The flowers in the lobby were beautiful. The doorman was always friendly. We arrived early so our room wasn’t ready. The bathroom they let us freshen up is was huge and perfect for taking you luggage changing for the day and then heading out while they held our bags. The hallways look like they’ve been freshened up with bright carpeting. And we loved the location. The negative: We were in a junior suite just down the hall from the Princess Diana suite. When we walked in we could instantly see how dated and worn the room was. Actually it wasn’t just dated, things were flat out broken. The blinds barely worked and didn’t even hang correctly. The bed skirt was pilling. The top drawer on the dresser was broken as well as the door on the tv stand. We were afraid to touch things because we didn’t want more to break. In the hallway there was a pile of dirty forks out on a credenza that stayed there the entire time we stayed at the hotel. It’s like Hilton has just given up on this hotel. It could be nice with a little effort. Instead it’s just sad.Show More
